December is here, and Bishkek is finally in year-end mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 16, one of the country’s largest Christmas trees was lit up on Ala-Too Square, and the whole city instantly took on a festive feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Grand Tree-Lighting Ceremony on the Central Square<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That day, on Ala-Too Square in central Bishkek,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev, Deputy Chairman of the City Council Zhyldyzbek Abdraimov, and other officials attended as a New Year tree about 35 meters tall was lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the lighting, there were fireworks and a free concert, and despite the freezing cold, the square was packed with locals and tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his speech, the mayor emphasized<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“the importance of creating a bright, welcoming space in the heart of the city”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and “how this celebration brings people of all generations together,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and said the city will continue to pursue urban development focused on comfort, safety, and the efficient use of resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I Actually Went… Huge Crowds and Traffic Jams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I also passed by Ala-Too Square that evening, and there were just so many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some roads were closed for the lighting ceremony, and the traffic was even worse than the usual evening rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had other errands that day, and honestly, getting around took a very long time\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After finishing my errands, I went back to the square, and even late in the evening there were still crowds of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Night, Ala-Too Square Feels Like an Amusement Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The free concert was still going on, and the square was buzzing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone was having a great time, kids and adults alike all smiles. With stalls selling light-up headbands and balloons, a Christmas market, and an illuminated merry-go-round, it felt like an amusement park at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the mayor, a similar show program is also planned for New Year’s Eve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishkek looks set to be very lively over the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
