What is the true identity of the “mysterious tower” that remains in Kyrgyzstan?

First, let’s take a closer look at the history and mysteries surrounding this tower!

Is the Burana Tower an ancient “minaret”?

A minaret is a tower that marks the time for prayer in a mosque. The true identity of the Burana Tower is said to be the oldest minaret in Central Asia, built in an ancient city that flourished through trade on the Silk Road.

A tower standing in a trading city on the Silk Road

So why is there a tower here? The place where the tower stands was once the center of the city of Balasagun. In the 11th century, it was a place that flourished greatly as a trading city on the Silk Road.

There are now meadows around the tower, but at the time there was a royal palace here and a bustling market with merchants. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it?

From 45m to 24m?

You have a keen eye for observation, noticing that “this tower seems to be broken in the middle…”. In fact, the tower was 45m high when it was built, but now it is only 24m high. Unfortunately, the top of the tower collapsed in an earthquake around 1900.

Part of a World Heritage Site

The Burana Tower is part of the World Heritage Site “Balasagun Ruins”. It was registered in 2014. The Balasagun Ruins are valuable evidence of the Silk Road trading route. Even though it’s half the size, it’s not just half the value, it’s doubled in value.

Three ways to enjoy the experience at Brana Tower

Before you go to the Brana Tower, check out what fun things you can do there!

A photogenic panoramic view from the top of the tower

As you climb the narrow staircase… there is a breathtaking view. With the Tian Shan Mountains in the background, the panorama of the vast grasslands stretches out to the far distance. It feels as if you have been transported back to the 11th century. On a clear day, the contrast with the Tian Shan Mountains is exquisite.

Meeting the Stone People (Barbar)

The mysterious stone statues scattered around the tower are called “balbal”. They are actually grave markers for ancient Turkic warriors.

The variety of facial expressions is interesting, with some stern faces and others full of charm.

The mini-museum is also a hidden gem.

A small museum is waiting for you right next to the Brana Tower. Inside you will find a collection of pottery, metalwork and even coins. Learn about history from the exhibits and let your mind wander to the distant past.

How to get to the Tower of Bran

If you’re planning to include the Burana Tower in your trip, check how to get there from Bishkek.

Location of the Bran Tower

It is located about 80km east of the capital, Bishkek, and towers over the outskirts of the town of Tokmok. It is an area with high-altitude Kyrgyz land and peaceful pastureland.

Time required from Bishkek

It takes about 1.5 hours by car from Bishkek. The distance is sufficient for a day trip, although it may vary depending on traffic conditions and the weather. It’s also perfect for a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

3 ways to get to the Tower of Brana

There are three main ways to access the Brana Tower.

Go by marshrutka (minibus)

A marshrutka is a small shared-ride bus that is common in Kyrgyzstan.

  1. Bishkek East Bus Terminal to Tokmok (marshrutka)
  2. Tokmak to the Burana Tower (marshrutka)

Go by marshrutka + taxi

How to use a taxi from Tokmak. To prevent being overcharged when using a taxi, we recommend using a taxi-hailing app such as “Yandex.Go”.

  1. Bishkek East Bus Terminal to Tokmok (marshrutka)
  2. Tokumaku to Brana Tower (by taxi)

One thing to be careful of is that if you make the driver wait, you should tell them approximately how long the tour will take. If you make them wait, you may be charged an additional fee.

Using a one-day tour

Using a Japanese or English guide is convenient as you can learn about the historical background while traveling comfortably. Prices and courses vary depending on the tour.
