[Kyrgyzstan News] Road Closures and School Closures Due to President Putin’s Visit

Salam! This is Sugi from ASHU TRAVEL, your guide to Central Asia’s breathtaking landscapes.

It has been announced that Russian President Putin will visit Kyrgyzstan this week for 3 days.
As a result, there are impacts across Bishkek, including road closures, detours, and school closures.

If you’re visiting as a tourist, you’ll need to take extra care when getting around for a few days.

President Putin to Visit Kyrgyzstan for 3 Days

The Russian and Kyrgyz governments announced
that President Putin will make a 3-day official visit, including:
• Talks with President Japarov
• A delegation of ministers and businesspeople (including Mr. Abramovich)
• Attendance at the CSTO summit
• Signing of official documents

The visit is said to be aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.

What’s Happening on the Ground in Kyrgyzstan: Road Closures and School Closures

In Bishkek, major roads are being closed and traffic restrictions are in place along the routes used by VIP motorcades.

The areas most affected are:
• The route from the airport to the city
• The area around the Presidential Residence
• Areas with many government facilities
• Main avenues in the city center

Because of the road closures, traffic at some times of day is two to three times worse than usual.

Some schools have also announced temporary closures, which is changing the flow of people around the city.

From Our Local Guide: Heightened Police Presence at Key Locations

According to ASHU TRAVEL guide Nuriya (who is in regular contact with the police and embassies):
• Police security has been stepped up at key locations
• Access may be restricted around the Presidential Residence
• Sometimes “a road you thought was open suddenly gets closed”
• For the next few days, it’s safest to “check as you go”

That’s her advice.

Advice for Travelers

There are no safety concerns in Kyrgyzstan, but the “traffic impacts that come with a VIP visit” may continue for a few days.

Travelers will have a smoother time if they keep the following in mind.
• Allow plenty of extra time when getting around
• Leave earlier than usual for airport transfers and tour meeting times
• Walking routes in the city center and government district may need to change temporarily
• Taxi arrival times are hard to predict due to detours
• Google Maps traffic info may not reflect road closures

After a few days, the city is expected to return to normal.
