Salamatsyzby! This is Sugi from ASHU TRAVEL, specialists in scenic horse riding tours in Central Asia.
I currently live in Kyrgyzstan, and I’ve also traveled to neighboring Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Based on that experience, I’ll give you an honest look at the topic travelers care about most: money.
There are many countries in Central Asia, but this time I’ll focus on travel budgets for four particularly popular ones.
“It’s such an unknown world that I have no idea how much money to bring!” If that’s your worry, this article will clear it up. Get a smart handle on your budget and take your first step toward the scenic trip of your dreams!
Q. How much does a trip to Central Asia cost in total?

A. As a rough guide, about ¥150,000 to ¥500,000 per person in total
In short, flights plus on-the-ground travel costs come to about ¥150,000 to ¥500,000.
The price range is wide because your budget varies greatly depending on where you go. It also depends on when you buy your flights, the purpose of your trip, and how you travel (on a tour or independently).
[Flights] Around ¥80,000 to ¥200,000 Round Trip: Choosing Your Route to Central Asia

Round-trip flights cost ¥80,000 to ¥200,000, varying greatly by season, destination and route.
Latest Flight Information for Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan (as of December 2025)

First of all, the routes available differ by destination. Here are the typical ways to get to each country:
- Kyrgyzstan: Usually via South Korea, China, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan.
- Kazakhstan: Via South Korea, China or Uzbekistan. *There are reports that a long-awaited direct flight from Japan will launch in 2026, so it looks set to become even more convenient!
- Uzbekistan: There’s a direct flight from Narita (Tokyo) to Tashkent, so access is excellent.
So for now, the typical style is to fly comfortably to Uzbekistan on a direct flight, and to reach Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan by combining connecting flights with an adventurous spirit.
Flights are most expensive mainly in summer.
Which Connection Should You Choose? “Reliable via Korea” or “Budget via China”

When choosing a connecting flight, pay special attention to the difference between routing via South Korea and via China. This is an important point that affects not only your budget but also the comfort of your trip.
① Our Top Recommendation Right Now: Reliable “Via Korea”
If you value smooth, reliable connections, go via South Korea. Incheon Airport has excellent facilities and is just like a shopping mall. Schedules are predictable, making it perfect for trips where you don’t want to waste time on the ground.
Budget guide (for Kyrgyzstan): about ¥80,000 to ¥150,000 round trip
Trinity Airways (formerly T’way Air) flies Incheon–Almaty twice a week. The planes are clean and the cabin crew seem friendly. One thing to note: both the outbound and return flights are overnight flights.
② For Value, Go “Via China”
On the other hand, if low price is your top priority, routing via China is worth a look. Depending on the season, you may find surprisingly cheap tickets.
However, connecting via China can be a bit tough: you may have to go through immigration once, and layovers can be very long. It’s a route for those who think “trouble is the spice of travel!” and for backpackers.
When to Buy Flights for Less

For Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, aim for “anytime but summer”; for Uzbekistan, aim for “midwinter.”
- Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan The best season is summer, from May to September. Winter and autumn can be harshly cold, but tickets tend to be cheaper.
- Uzbekistan The best seasons are the pleasant spring and autumn (April–June, September–October). Midwinter is the off-season, so it’s cheaper. Summer is scorching, but it overlaps with Japanese summer holidays, so prices often don’t drop much.
Deliberately traveling slightly off-season is the smart way to keep your travel costs down!
[Local Costs] About ¥70,000 to ¥300,000: The Reality of Prices in Each Country

Next, the typical cost of spending money on the ground.
The three Central Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan) each have their own price characteristics.
Kyrgyzstan & Uzbekistan | Prices Are a Bit Lower! Your Budget Depends on What You Do

Prices in these two countries are somewhat lower than in Japan, roughly 70–80% of Japanese prices. For meals, $10 is enough to eat your fill.
However, not everything is cheap, and your overall trip budget varies a lot depending on what you do.
- Kyrgyzstan: Popular Song-Kul Lake and Issyk-Kul Lake are far from the capital, so you’ll need to pay for transfers and accommodation, plus horses if you go riding. English often isn’t understood, so if you want to really enjoy yourself, traveling with a guide gives peace of mind.
- Uzbekistan: The main expenses are admission fees for historical sites, high-speed train tickets between cities, and embroidery workshops.
Local costs are roughly ¥15,000 to ¥50,000 per day. You can travel cheaply, but spending on experiences greatly improves the quality of your trip.
Kazakhstan | Budget About the Same as Japan

Kazakhstan, on the other hand, is a bit different. Meals range from cheap to expensive, but accommodation in cities like Astana and Almaty can require a budget similar to or even higher than Japan.
Also, labor costs have risen sharply recently, so transfer and guide fees are somewhat higher than in Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan.
To Really Enjoy It, Consider a Guided Tour

You can travel around Central Asia independently on a budget, but there are some unique challenges.
The “Language Barrier” in the Russian-Speaking World and the Importance of a Guide
This is actually the biggest pitfall. The language situation in Central Asia is complicated and varies by country.
| Country | Main languages | How widely English is understood |
| Kyrgyzstan | Kyrgyz, Russian | Young people sometimes understand it, but cities are basically Russian-speaking Rural areas speak Kyrgyz |
| Kazakhstan | Kazakh, Russian | Understood only occasionally in cities. Russian is the main language |
| Uzbekistan | Uzbek, Russian, English | Understood more than in Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan, but Uzbek is the main language |
What they all have in common is that “the basics are Russian or each country’s native language.” When shopping, eating out or dealing with problems, there are many situations where English alone won’t get you far.
