Your first trip to Kyrgyzstan is exciting, isn’t it? But just like any other destination abroad, there are pitfalls you only notice once you get there. I’ve lost out myself by not being prepared enough…
So this time, for anyone about to travel in Kyrgyzstan, I’ll share three points you really need to watch out for, based on real experience.
Whether it’s a short trip or a long stay, if you want to enjoy comfortable sightseeing in Kyrgyzstan, please read this before you go!
Point 1: Always Bring US Dollars for Currency Exchange

Kyrgyzstan uses its own currency, the som (KGS), but almost no exchange offices will accept currencies other than dollars, such as Japanese yen. Even when they do, the reality is that you’ll get a pretty poor rate.
Once, at an exchange counter in a local department store, I tried exchanging ¥10,000 and got only 4,000 som. The normal rate would have been around 6,000 som, so I lost about 30%.
Remember These 3 Things
- Exchanging Japanese yen for som is basically a no-go
- US dollars can be exchanged anywhere
- Bring bills that aren’t torn (dirty or damaged bills may be refused)
– A real experience –
When I forgot to bring dollars, I was really stuck… Luckily our local guide Nuriya helped me out, but it took quite a bit of negotiating. If I’d been traveling alone, I’d have been completely out of luck.
Point 2: Don’t Forget to Install a Translation App

In Kyrgyzstan, there are many situations where English isn’t understood. Especially in rural areas, even basic words like “water” or “bus” may not get through.
The main languages are Russian and Kyrgyz. Even in cities, it’s safer not to assume English will be understood outside tourist sites and hotels.
When a Translation App Comes in Handy
- Ordering at restaurants and explaining allergies
- Dealing with taxis and shops
- Explaining things or asking for help in an emergency
– A real experience –
Once, when I went shopping alone at a supermarket in the countryside, the staff spoke no English at all, and gestures didn’t work… I somehow managed with a translation app. It’s definitely worth having one installed.
On ASHU TRAVEL tours, a Japanese- or English-speaking guide accompanies you, so you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
Point 3: Forget Your Sunglasses and You’ll Regret It

Sunglasses are a must for protecting your eyes from Kyrgyzstan’s strong sunlight. But that’s not all: they’re also essential for protecting your eyes from dust.
In rural and mountain areas, many roads are unpaved, and fine dust rises up when you’re traveling by car or riding a horse. If it gets in your eyes, the pain can be so bad that sightseeing is out of the question…
– A real experience –
Once, while riding up a mountain trail, I’d left my sunglasses in my bag, and dust kicked up by the horse in front blew straight into my face. It got into the eye that wasn’t protected, and for nearly an hour I couldn’t open it properly. The other side, which was well protected, was fine.
Sunglasses aren’t just for blocking UV rays; they’re a protective travel item that shields your eyes from wind and dirt. If you forget them, there may well come a moment when you regret it.
Small Preparations Make a Big Difference to Your Kyrgyzstan Trip

Exchanging dollars, preparing a translation app, carrying sunglasses. They may all seem minor, but at the time I was really stuck and regretted not being better prepared.
To avoid trouble on the ground and make the most of your time in Kyrgyzstan, a little preparation before you leave will make for a comfortable trip.
