A Hidden Gem for Theatergoers?! Enjoying Giselle at the Stunning Soviet-Era Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet Theatre | Travel Diary

Salamatsyzby! This is Sugi from ASHU TRAVEL, your guide to scenic horse riding trips in Central Asia.

I went to see the full-scale ballet “Giselle” in a Soviet-era building in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
There’s something special about being able to enjoy high-quality art so casually, at a surprisingly affordable price.

If you love opera or ballet, Bishkek might actually be a hidden gem!

What is the Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet Theatre like?

A grand, classic Soviet-era theater in the center of Bishkek. In Kyrgyz it’s called Кыргыз улуттук опера жана балет театры.

Its beautiful pale pink walls and stately exterior catch the eye, and prestigious performances are staged here throughout the year. It’s easy to reach from the city center, so you can drop by while sightseeing.

Local name: Кыргыз улуттук опера жана балет театры
English name: Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet Theatre

History of the building

It started in 1926 as a small theater venue and took on its current form in 1955. For many years it has served as one of the country’s main stages, establishing itself as a cultural hub for the local community.

Highlight 1: Beautiful Soviet-era architecture and decoration

The exterior is lined with impressive columns, and a triangular pediment above the front gives it a lovely classical feel. In the evening it’s lit up, and the play of light and shadow is beautiful. The symmetrical composition is gorgeous, so we recommend photographing it straight on or from a slight angle.

Step inside and you’ll see grand Soviet-era design features such as chandeliers and wide staircases. The ceiling of the auditorium is especially colorful and opulent.

The lobby also has posters of famous Kyrgyz actors. If you have time before the performance starts, be sure to enjoy the architecture and decor!

Highlight 2: Authentic ballet and opera at an affordable price

Prices vary depending on the performance and seat, but they’re roughly 1,000 som (around $10, just under ¥2,000). And of course, every performance is by professionals. When I first heard the price, it was so cheap I thought there must be some mistake. Apparently prices have even gone up compared with the past.

If you’re interested in ballet or opera but have never really had the chance to go, this could be quite a hidden gem.

Performance report! Enjoying Giselle at the Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet Theatre

By day, I’m a student studying Russian at a university. This time, my teacher invited me to see the famous ballet “Giselle” together.

Getting excited by the beautiful building

The moment I saw the exterior, I said “Wow…!” rather loudly. Much of the audience was Russian, and many people were dressed up. The atmosphere alone got me excited.

The lobby was lined with posters of famous local actors and actresses. When I pointed at one and asked my teacher, “Is this you?!”, she joked, “Yes, that’s me (lol).” My Russian still has a long way to go, but I was happy to start understanding a few jokes.

Getting laughed at for misunderstanding the story of Giselle

The performance was “Giselle.” I knew it was the title of a famous ballet, but I didn’t know the story in detail.

When I asked my teacher what it was about, she said, “A village girl named Giselle dies because of a love across social classes, and then she rises from her grave.”

When I first heard that, I asked with a straight face, “So it’s a horror story where she rises from the grave?”—and my teacher burst out laughing. As it turns out, it’s not horror at all, but a sad and beautiful love story.

Surprised that photos were allowed

Everyone in the venue was snapping photos, and at first I was surprised—”Wait, is that OK?” There was an announcement asking people not to use flash, so taking pictures quietly is fine. However, photography may be prohibited for some performances, so it’s best to check in advance.

The live music was so soothing I dozed off for a moment

As the orchestra’s live music sank in, there was a moment when I somehow got sleepy. Actually, I have a habit of falling asleep during live music… I slept soundly through Wicked in London, and at the New Year’s Eve performance of Beethoven’s Ninth in Vienna I slept the whole time, leaving my husband utterly appalled.

I snapped awake partway through the first act. Safe this time.

Overall impressions

Ballet has almost no dialogue, so even if you don’t understand the language, the emotion draws you in. Even with my still-limited Russian, I could follow the story through the music and movement. Above all, the biggest surprise was being able to “see a professional performance at this price”—it really feels like a hidden gem.

Tickets, access and nearby spots

Here’s a quick summary of what to know before you go: how to buy tickets, how to get there, and places to stop by nearby.

How to get tickets

You can buy tickets on Kyrgyzstan’s ticket website, “Ticket.kg.”

Website ▶ https://ticket.kg/ (displayed in Russian)

The site is in Russian, so if you’re unsure, it’s reassuring to ask a travel company to arrange tickets for you. This time, my university teacher booked them online for me and I paid her for the tickets.

Access

The theater is near TSUM, Bishkek’s popular department store (also spelled CHUM). It’s in the heart of Bishkek, so it’s easy to get to.

If you’re going by taxi, installing the ride-hailing app “Yandex Go” before you leave home will make getting there smooth.

Public buses are easy to use—you just pay about 20 som when you get on. However, it can be confusing at first to know which bus to take, so if it’s your first time, we recommend using tour transfers or a taxi.

Nearby spots

  • Shopping and dining at TSUM department store
  • Taking photos and strolling around Ala-Too Square
  • Commemorative photos in front of the Manas statue and the Kyrgyz flag
  • Learning about history at the State Historical Museum of Kyrgyzstan

It’s in a perfect location for a short city walk before or after the performance!

Enjoy an “affordable art experience” in Kyrgyzstan

At the Kyrgyz National Opera and Ballet Theatre, you can enjoy authentic ballet and opera up close in a historic building.
Performing arts that often seem expensive felt very accessible here.

Losing yourself in the sound of live music and the movement of the dancers in a hall that still carries the air of Russian culture is truly one of Kyrgyzstan’s hidden luxuries.
If you’re visiting Bishkek, be sure to add it to your travel plans!
