SUPARA logo

Salam! This is Sugi from ASHU TRAVEL, offering horse riding journeys through Central Asia’s stunning landscapes.

“When I’m in Kyrgyzstan, I want to fully immerse myself in nomadic culture.” “If I get the chance, I’d love to eat traditional food inside a yurt.”

Supara, near Bishkek, makes all of these wishes come true in one place. It’s an ethno-complex where you can experience Kyrgyz traditional culture and cuisine with all five senses.

This time, I’ll introduce the appeal of Supara based on what our local staff living in Kyrgyzstan actually experienced.

If you want to feel Kyrgyz hospitality with all your senses, time at Supara is perfect. Why not get away from the bustle of the city and spend some relaxing time there?

*Please note that opening hours, prices, menus, etc. may change.

What Is Supara? An Ethno-Complex Where You Can Experience Kyrgyz Tradition

SUPARA gate

Supara, near Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek, is an ethno-complex where you can experience Kyrgyz nomadic culture and traditions with all five senses. From stays in yurts (traditional tents) and cottages to traditional food and activities like horse riding and archery, it’s a place where you can enjoy everything Kyrgyzstan has to offer.

Supara has two locations, each offering a different experience.

Supara: A Place Born from Its Founder’s Passion

Tabyldy Egemberdiev

Supara was created by Tabyldy Egemberdiev, founder of Shoro, Kyrgyzstan’s largest beverage maker, out of his strong desire to pass his country’s culture on to future generations.

On every business trip abroad, he felt that “Kyrgyzstan has few places to proudly show foreigners,” so he decided to build an ethno-complex recreating Kyrgyz traditions and nomadic life.

Although he wasn’t an architect, he was personally involved in the design and construction, and he stuck firmly to using only natural materials.

Supara, born this way, is now loved by tourists and locals alike as a special place to experience Kyrgyz culture.

A Nomadic World Recreated with Traditional Materials

Supara's architecture

Supara’s buildings are made only from the natural materials used by Kyrgyz ancestors. Stone, clay, wood, leather, straw, reeds, and other materials essential to nomadic life are faithfully reproduced.

The same goes for the yurts: each of the seven yurts has a different design and interior, so there’s something new to discover every visit. Inside, felt carpets and richly embroidered pillows and bedding make you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time to nomadic life.

The stone buildings are another highlight. Interiors showcasing the skills of carpenters, blacksmiths, and artisans let you feel the living history and culture of Kyrgyzstan.

Supara’s Two Locations | Which One Should You Visit?

Supara has two facilities around Bishkek. Choose based on what you want to do.

Supara Chunkurchak | Mountain resort style

Location: Chunkurchak Gorge, southeast of Bishkek – about 1 hour by car from central Bishkek –

A setting in the great outdoors, surrounded by the majestic Tian Shan mountains.

A stream runs through the grounds, with seven yurts scattered among the trees.

You can enjoy a meal, a nature walk, and cultural experiences all in one day.

Supara Ethno Complex | Restaurant style near the city

Location: Kok-Zhar village near Bishkek – about 20–30 minutes by car from central Bishkek

Close enough for an easy visit. You can enjoy Kyrgyz cuisine in traditional yurt-style buildings.

There’s also a museum on site.

How to Choose

If you want to relax in the great outdoors → Chunkurchak

If you want to drop by from the city for a meal → Ethno Complex

At Supara, you can enjoy traditional Kyrgyz cuisine to your heart’s content. Savor dishes full of nomadic wisdom, surrounded by nature.

What Makes Supara’s Restaurants Special

Supara restaurant 2

    • Experience traditional culture in a yurt-style restaurant
    • Simple, gentle flavors made with fresh local ingredients
    • Lessons you discover through food culture

Supara’s restaurants are special spaces that focus on local ingredients and recreate traditional cooking methods. Besides indoor seating, you can dine in a round yurt-style restaurant or on an open-air terrace.

Learning about Kyrgyz food culture reminds us of the importance of farming and food culture that modern Japanese people have lost sight of, and may even offer hints for rethinking our own eating habits.

What Sugi Actually Ate + Recommended Dishes

At Supara, you can taste Kyrgyzstan’s signature dishes. From the menu items popular with tourists, here are my top picks.

    ✅ Shashlik (Шашлык)
Fragrant skewers slowly grilled over charcoal. Juicy and very filling. Goes great with beer, too.

    ✅ Kuurdak (Куурдак)
Lamb and potatoes stir-fried with spices, a classic Kyrgyz home-cooked dish. Its savory flavor is addictive.

    ✅ Borsok (Борсок)
Fried bread eaten at festivals and on special occasions. Crispy outside and fluffy inside, it’s superb with honey or kaymak (clotted cream).

    ✅ Shorpo (Шорпо)
A lamb soup whose appeal is its deep flavor from long, slow simmering. A simple, warming taste.

Accommodation at Supara | A Kyrgyz-Style Stay in a Yurt or Cottage

    Supara yurt

At Supara, you can enjoy two types of stays: yurts and cottages.

An Authentic Yurt Experience | Feel the Nomadic Way of Life

    Yurt

The yurt is the traditional dwelling Kyrgyz nomads have used in their migratory life. Supara’s yurts are faithfully recreated right down to the interior, and the space lined with felt carpets and embroidered bedding is very photogenic.

They’re well insulated, so you won’t feel the cold, even in winter.Fully experience nomadic life while staying comfortable!

    Relax in a Comfortable Cottage

    Supara door

If you’re “a little unsure about a yurt,” the cottage-style accommodation is also recommended. Cottages are more spacious than yurts, so you can really relax.

Whichever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy quiet time surrounded by nature, far from the bustle of Bishkek.

Activities at Supara | Where Culture Meets Nature

    Supara swing

Supara offers plenty of activities that let you enjoy Kyrgyz traditional culture and magnificent nature at the same time. Note that Supara has two locations, and what you can experience differs by location, so check in advance.

Hiking | Explore the Surrounding Nature

    Supara hiking

The area around Supara is also a hiking spot with magnificent nature and wildflowers. The routes are well maintained, so take a leisurely walk through nature and feel the mountain breeze.

Exhibits | A Glimpse of Nomadic Life

    Supara exhibits

Traditional costumes and colorful embroidery and more let you experience Kyrgyz traditional culture up close, with glimpses into the history and life of the nomads.
