[Kyrgyzstan News] A Giant Tree Lights Up in Bishkek: Winter Illuminations Worth Seeing at Least Once!

Salam! This is Sugi from ASHU TRAVEL, your guide to Central Asia’s breathtaking landscapes.

December is here, and Bishkek is finally in year-end mode.

On December 16, one of the country’s largest Christmas trees was lit up on Ala-Too Square, and the whole city instantly took on a festive feel.

A Grand Tree-Lighting Ceremony on the Central Square

That day, on Ala-Too Square in central Bishkek,

Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev, Deputy Chairman of the City Council Zhyldyzbek Abdraimov, and other officials attended as a New Year tree about 35 meters tall was lit.

Before the lighting, there were fireworks and a free concert, and despite the freezing cold, the square was packed with locals and tourists.

In his speech, the mayor emphasized

“the importance of creating a bright, welcoming space in the heart of the city”

and “how this celebration brings people of all generations together,”

and said the city will continue to pursue urban development focused on comfort, safety, and the efficient use of resources.

When I Actually Went… Huge Crowds and Traffic Jams

I also passed by Ala-Too Square that evening, and there were just so many people.

Some roads were closed for the lighting ceremony, and the traffic was even worse than the usual evening rush.

I had other errands that day, and honestly, getting around took a very long time…

After finishing my errands, I went back to the square, and even late in the evening there were still crowds of people.

At Night, Ala-Too Square Feels Like an Amusement Park

The free concert was still going on, and the square was buzzing.

Everyone was having a great time, kids and adults alike all smiles. With stalls selling light-up headbands and balloons, a Christmas market, and an illuminated merry-go-round, it felt like an amusement park at night.

According to the mayor, a similar show program is also planned for New Year’s Eve.

Bishkek looks set to be very lively over the holidays.

For Travelers: Things to Keep in Mind This Season

If you’re visiting Bishkek at this time of year, please keep a few things in mind.

  • Traffic jams are common in the city center from late afternoon into the evening
  • Roads around Ala-Too Square may be closed during year-end events
  • Allow plenty of extra time when traveling by taxi
  • Some areas are more crowded and noisier than usual at night

This is a special time to experience Bishkek’s winter energy and see locals enjoying the festivities, so give yourself plenty of time and have fun!
