This time, I’ll introduce the charms of the Epic of Manas and how to experience it in Kyrgyzstan!

What Is the Epic of Manas? Kyrgyzstan’s Proud Heroic Legend

First, a quick look at what kind of story it is!

The World’s Longest Epic: How Many Times Longer!?

The Epic of Manas is one of the longest heroic epics in the world, handed down in Kyrgyzstan. It’s an incredible 500,000+ lines long! By comparison, that’s about 20 times the length of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey combined, and 2.5 times India’s Mahabharata.

This grand story has been passed down for generations. Rather than being written down, it has been handed on through an oral tradition of storytellers. Because of this, the story and expressions differ subtly from one storyteller to another.

The Story of the Hero Manas | A Simple Synopsis

The Epic of Manas is broadly divided into three parts.

Part 1: The birth and deeds of the hero Manas
Manas was born the son of nomads and, from childhood, was a boy of extraordinary strength and wisdom. As he grew up, he led the Kyrgyz nomads, fighting off invaders and uniting the tribes.

Part 2: The story of Manas’s son Semetey
After Manas’s death, his son Semetey carries on his father’s will and struggles to unite the tribes once again.

Part 3: The challenge of his grandson Seitek
Semetey’s son Seitek is raised among the enemy and grows up not knowing his origins. But when he learns the truth, he fights to reunite the Kyrgyz people.

It’s not just a heroic legend; it’s still passed down today as a symbol of Kyrgyz national identity and nomadic culture.

The Cultural Value of the Epic of Manas

Traditional costumes

Why has this story been handed down for generations? Let’s explore its deep cultural value.

A story that underpins national identity

The Epic of Manas isn’t just a hero’s tale; it symbolizes the national pride of the Kyrgyz people. Their history as nomads, memories of battle, the importance of unity: it’s all packed into this epic.

During the Soviet era, the epic was banned for a time. But the Kyrgyz people kept telling it in secret, protecting their culture.

The “manaschi” who pass it on

The Epic of Manas has been handed down not in writing but by storytellers (manaschi).

What is a manaschi?
A manaschi is a storyteller who receives special training from a young age and can recite an epic running to hundreds of thousands of lines.
It’s not just about memorization; they also need a talent for telling the story with their own expressions and improvisation.

A storytelling culture still alive today
In recent years, manaschi performances have been held in Kyrgyzstan and abroad, and the tradition is being reappreciated. In particular, it’s said that more schools in Kyrgyzstan are having children study the Epic of Manas.

Inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage! An Epic Recognized by the World

In 2009, the Epic of Manas was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It was a historic event symbolizing Kyrgyz culture and showing that the epic is a heritage of global value.

Passing things on “through storytelling rather than writing” is a cultural practice that has almost disappeared in the modern world. That’s exactly why the Epic of Manas is so precious and is still being passed down today.
